The Evolution of Muguet Aldehydes
The next milestone in the muguet family was the discovery of cyclamen aldehyde ( 2 ), which was introduced by Givaudan in 1919. It was derived from citronellal by adding a methyl group at the alpha position. This modification gave it a more floral and less citrusy character than hydroxycitronellal ( 1 ), as well as improved stability and color. Cyclamen aldehyde ( 2 ) was used in fragrances such as L’Air du Temps (Nina Ricci, 1948), where it enhanced the freshness and radiance of the carnation accord.

Some of them, such as Lilial ( 3 ) and Lyral ( 4 ), have been banned or severely limited by the IFRA standards, which regulate the use of fragrance ingredients. This poses a challenge for perfumers, who have to find alternative ways to create muguet accords without compromising their quality and creativity.
One possible solution is to use natural or biotechnological ingredients that can mimic or enhance the scent of muguet. For example, some plants such as lily, freesia, or cyclamen contain molecules that have a muguet-like odor, such as dihydrofarnesal ( 8 ), dihydrofarnesyl acetate ( 9 ), or phenylacetaldehyde oxime ( 10 ). These molecules can be extracted from the plants or produced by fermentation or enzymatic processes.
